PRESS RELEASE 02/20/2020
The North Texas Chapter of the CNLA would like to recognize the two recipients of the 2020 Kate Watts Memorial Scholarship – Kelley Cartwright and Mayuri Patel. The scholarship was open to any practicing CNL, regardless of chapter affiliation, and covered the complete registration fees for the recipients.
Kate Watts was a Clinical Nurse
Leader employed by Texas Health Resources on an acute oncology unit. She was
diagnosed with a rare, highly aggressive form of inflammatory breast cancer
shortly after graduation from Texas Christian University’s CNL program. Kate
underwent extensive chemotherapy, surgical interventions and radiation
treatments including trial studies at MD Anderson. She never gave up and
continued to work as a CNL while fighting the cancer. When Kate’s cancer
metastasized to her liver and pain management became difficult, she had the
extremely difficult conversation with her daughter, age 10, and received care
from Hospice until her fight was lost. Kate was only 45 at the time of her
death, she loved being a nurse and loved her practice as a CNL.
The members of the North Texas
Chapter of the CNLA are hopeful that they will continue to be able to give back to the CNL community of
professionals in the future.
