Practicing CNLs must remain current on CNL trends and practices as well as relevant healthcare issues. Consequently, CNLs are required to renew certification every five years prior to December 31st the year of their CNL certification expiration date. CNL Renewal is obtained through the Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC).
Renewal applications may be submitted any time prior to the due date if the applicant meets recertification criteria. Applicants renewing early are not penalized for adjusting an earlier expiration. The new renewal expiration date is based upon the previous expiration date. Early submission is recommended.
The renewal application should be filed with CNC no later than thirty days prior to certification expiration. All practice hours, contact hours, and graduate course work must be earned prior to the certification expiration date to apply towards recertification. Activities toward renewal must have occurred within the five-year recertification period.
